While innocent & therefore blest Like dying flowers we sunk to rest Then weep not since in peace we sleep And happier are than you that weep. Also of their son Isaac who died in East India June 16th 1853 aged 30 years. Also of Sarah Brown their Parent who died April 29th 1857 aged 66 years. Also near this place is interred Elizabeth Wootten widow of the late John Clarke Wootten Esqr of Oxford & sister of the late Christiana Hogarth, she d. respected by all who knew her July 29th 1825 in the 53 years. of her age. Also to the memory of Adam Airey Hogarth, died in Canada November 17th 1839 aged 28. The Reverend Arthur George Hogarth died at Bungay Suffolk December 1st 1857 aged 44. Timothy Hogarth died at Copt Hill Northnd. June 23rd 1852 aged 36, sons of the Reverend William Hogarth.

Residence (sic) in this Parish where she died July 23rd 1871 Aged 68 years. Like one of old she was Full of Good Works & Her Memory is now Blessed. Be thou faithful unto death.

Engayne (In. N.). William . de Wybergh married Elianor ye only daughter & Sole Heir of Gilbert de Engayne of Clifton in ye County of Westmorld in ye 38 of K. Edwd ye 3d By wch Elianor came ye Manor of Clifton to ye Wyberghs. (Above is another stone slab with Arms of Wybergh “ or 3 bars sable in chief 2 mullets of 2nd," impaling Engayne " gu. fesse dancette between 6 cross crosslets fitchee or .” Crest, griffin's head erased or. with Esquire's helmet and Mantling. (Mr. Hill who visited the church 1848, notes this as at the porch, also the date 1738 below, and that on either side of the inscription hung 2 small escutcheons on parchment with narrow black frames about a foot long, resembling small pic tures, thereon the arms of Wyberh impaling Hilton and probably placed there on that marriage in 1713, or else in 1738. Hill MSS. vi, 87. Coll. Arms C. 3 g. 2nd cal. 17b.
Fallowfield (E. window). Arms of Fallowfield.* * The centre window in Machell's time had a crucifix much defaced, but has now only arms that are “ neither fish, flesh, nor heraldry,” i.e. two-thirds of shield from top checky ar. az. vert. gules and purp. alternately, base sa. thereon an escallop or, “ a piece of modern patchwork by a Penrith glazier,” and the latter “ glowing with all the colours which his shop afforded,” and inserted during Mr. Dand's incumbency. Machell says there was a shield over the dexter figure in one of the east windows, which looked like the arms of Fallowfield of Strickland partly defaced, i.e. three escallops or. the sinister one gone. The lower escallop has been apparently retained in the new checky above. Hill MSS. VI. 81, 85.

Gilbert (N). In memory of Richard Gilbert who lost his Life on the Railway Works at Clifton Moor May 9th 1846 Aged 20 years. See what a sudden change in me took place And snatch’d me from the world in haste, I had not time once more my friends to see But left them all to weep & mourn for me, Oh may this admonition teach us all How frail is man, how unforeseen his fall. This Stone was Erected by his Affectionate Brother George Gilbert.

A life of Grief unknown to Bounteous Fair Till Death Releaved (sic) my Agonising Prayer, With Future hopes my Soul in Silence rest, To Rise again & be a Heavenly Guest. Sweet is the Day of Sacred Rest No Mortal cares shall Seise my Breast O may I wake with Sweet Surprise And in my Saviour's Image Rise. This stone is erected by her daughter Rachael Workman.

Sacred memory of The Reverend Jonathan Moorhouse, Rector of Clifton, who died 13th (15th Hill) of July 1818 aged 63 years. , and of Barbara his widow who died 29th of July in the same years. aged 69 years. , also in remembrance of their only son Jonathan Moorhouse Esquire Captain in the Honble East India Company's Artillery Service who died 31st of May 1823. at Mysoor in India aged 41 years. This monument is erected by the first cousins of the late Captain Moorhouse in testimony of their esteem & regard for the memory of their deceased relatives (relations Hill).
Patton The slab of the Reverend Robert Patton Historian of the Rebellion of 1715 buried in the churchyard, close to the chancel on the south side “was broken up in 1850 by the masons when repairing the church.” Hill MSS. VI. 96.
Rennie (Metal plate found in Rectory grounds). This is in m. Jane Rennie, that departed this life 11th August 1778 aged 48 years. In her did centre the happiness of human life She was a real friend and virtuous wife. (Cumberland and Westmorland Antiquarian Transactions, pt. 2, vol. IV. p. 542. The Rector, Mr. Keys-Wells kindly showed this).

Wallace (Chancel floor). In the Vault beneath are deposited the Remains of Elizabeth Wallace, widow of James Wallace, Esqr. of Carleton Hall in the County of Cumberland, His Majesty's Attorney General. She died on the 18th of April 1811 in the 70th years. of her Age.
Wharton {N). In memory of Thomas Wharton who died November the 1st 1'869 aged 62 years.
Wilkinson (S). Here lies interred the Body of Thomas Wilkinson Who departed this life June the 20th 1761 in the 35th years. of his Age. Here Also lies the Body of Mary his daughter who died October the 9th 1761.

Sacred memory of William Hogarth Esqr of Clifton B. June 3rd 1805, died June 24th 1870, also of Sarah-Ann daughter of J. N. Browne First wife of the said W. Hogarth died June 26th 1829 aged 26 years. Also of John-Edward Hogarth, son of William & Mary Isabella Hogarth, Lost at sea March 1854 aged 13 years. (Third side). Sacred memory of Christopher Clarke Hogarth second son of the Reverend William Hogarth & Christiana his wife who died in the 14 years. of his age July 18th 1821 at Crow Hall & was interred at Cramlington in the County of Northumberland. Also near this place is interred Elizabeth Wootten widow of the late John Clarke Wootten Esqr of Oxford & sister of the late Christiana Hogarth, she d. respected by all who knew her July 29th 1825 in the 53 years. of her age. Also to the memory of Adam Airey Hogarth, died in Canada November 17th 1839 aged 28. The Reverend Arthur George Hogarth died at Bungay Suffolk December 1st 1857 aged 44. Timothy Hogarth died at Copt Hill Northnd. June 23rd 1852 aged 36, sons of the Reverend William Hogarth.
Workman (S). Sacred memory of Agness (sic) Workman of Clifton. Sister of the late David Harrison of Clifton. She died July 31st 1811 Aged 78 years. A life of Grief unknown to Bounteous Fair Till Death Releaved (sic) my Agonising Prayer, With Future hopes my Soul in Silence rest, To Rise again & be a Heavenly Guest. Sweet is the Day of Sacred Rest No Mortal cares shall Seise my Breast O may I wake with Sweet Surprise And in my Saviour's Image Rise. This stone is erected by her daughter Rachael Workman.
Workman (E. walt). Herelieth the body of Jane the daughter of Thomas Workman of Brown-how, who departed this life on the 8th day of March A.D. 1756 Aged 17 years. Here lieth the Body of Thomas Workman of Brown-how who departed this life on the 19th Day of March A.D. 1763 Aged 69 years.

Also of their eldest son Harrison Workman who died at Darlington June 18th 1810 aged 15 years. , & of their son John Workman who died at Clifton February 13th 184 aged 8 years. Also of Agnes Vickers daughter to the above who departed this life at Baltimore U. S. N. America, July 26th 184S aged 56 years. & of Lucy Workman also daughter to the above who departed this life at Clifton December 30th 1850 aged 57 years.

Wydergh (In. N.). William . de Wybergh married Elianor ye only daughter & Sole Heir of Gilbert de Engayne of Clifton in ye County of Westmorld in ye 38 of K. Edwd ye 3d By wch Elianor came ye Manor of Clifton to ye Wyberghs. (Above is another stone slab with Arms of Wybergh “ or 3 bars sable in chief 2 mullets of 2nd," impaling Engayne " gu. fesse dancette between 6 cross crosslets fitchee or .” Crest, griffin's head erased or. with Esquire's helmet and Mantling. (Mr. Hill who visited the church 1848, notes this as at the porch, also the date 1738 below, and that on either side of the inscription hung 2 small escutcheons on parchment with narrow black frames about a foot long, resembling small pic tures, thereon the arms of Wyberh impaling Hilton and probably placed there on that marriage in 1713, or else in 1738.
