Wordsworth (In. floor brass). Sacred memory of Richard Wordsworth Esquire of Sockbridge. . . . . . . who died 2 . . . June 1760.* (Buried 27 June, 1760 Parish Register Per Reverend C. B. Norcliffe). * Grandfather of the Poet, who states of him that he "was the first of the name who came into Westmorland." See "Robinson of the White House, Appleby," London 1874, p. 31. This brass has been invisible since 1860 owing to the new flagging then laid down. Mr. Hodson writes about it to Mr. Bellasis 13 Augt. 1887, " I am sorry to say that I know nothing of the brass plate to the memory of the father of Ann Myers. I have never seen it, but can quite think it is under the present floor. When our heating apparatus was put in, a drain had to be cut across the west end of the chancel for the hot water pipes to cross, and it was then found that there was a second floor of flags quite perfect, and about six inches lower than the present floor. So that this brass may very easily be under the present floor and on the lower one. If we knew the approximate position of the said brass a flag or two could easily be lifted to find it. There is no soil between the two floors the upper one is laid on low walls." Mr. Norcliffe proposes to have it unearthed.
