Kendal (E). In memory of Thomas Gawith of this town, whitesmith who died November 16th 1846 aged 38 years. Boast not thyself of tomorrow for thou knowest not what a day may bring forth. Also of Mary Ann his daughter who died September lst, 1839 aged 3 years. Also of Elizabeth his daughter who died August 23rd 1846 aged 10 months. Also of Susannah his daughter who died December 31st 1851 aged 7 years. and 11 m. (per Mr. Jennings). Mr. Gawith, cousin of Mr. Samuel G. of Lowther St. was on an excursion to Shap 8 November 1846 on a railway engine, the " Medusa " which came into collision at Birklands with another engine called the " Trio," whereby he fell head foremost against the fire-hole of the engine, which, severely burning him, caused his death 8 days later.
