Dorset Appleby St Lawrence

(Chancel N. altar tomb). Here Iyes expectinge y second comeinge of our Lord & Saviour Jesus Christ ye dead body of ye Lady Anne Clifford, daur. & sole heire to George Clifford, 3d Earl of Cumberland by his blessed wife "Margarett Russell, Countesse of Cumberland wch Lady Anne was borne in Skipton Castle in Crayen ye 30th January (beinge Fryday) in ye yeare 1590, as ye yeare begins on New Yeares day & by a longe continued discente from her father & her noble auncestors, she was Barronesse Clifford, Westmerland & Vescy, High Sheriffesse of ye County of Westmerland & Lady of ye Honor of Skipton In Craven aforesaid She married for her first husband Richard Sackvile, Earl of Dorsett, & for her second husband Phillipp Herberte, Earle of Pembrooke & Mountgomery, leaveinge behind her onely 2 daurs. that lived wch she had by her firste husband, the eldest Margarett Countesse of Thannett & the younger Isabella Countesse of Northampton, which lady Anne Clifford, Countess Dowager of Pembrooke, Dorsett & Mountgomery deceased at her castle of Brougham ye 22nd day of March in ye yeare of our Lord 1675. Christianly, willingly & quietly havinge before her death seene a plentifull issue by her two daughters of 13 grandchildren & her body Iyes buryed in this vaulte.

George Clifford Earl of Cumberland, Baroness Clifford Westmerland and Vescy, Lady of ye honour of Skipton in Craven, and high Sheriffess, by inheritance, of ye county of Westmerland, who departed This life in Her castle of Bougham in ye county ye 22 th March, 1675, Havin Attain’d ye age of 86 years The 30 th January before.

Here lyethe interred the bodye of the ladye Margaret Russel, Countesse Dowager of Cumberland, youngeste childe to Franncis Russell, seconde Earle of Bedford, marryed to George Clyfford, third Earle of Cumberland, she lyved his wife xxix yeeres, & dyed his wyddowe at Brougham Castle the XXIId of May MDCXVI ten yeeres & seaven monethes after his decease, she had yssue by him two sonnes Franncis & Robert who both dyed younge, & one daughter the ladye An Clyfford marryed to Richard Sackville third Earle of Dorset who in memorye of her religious mother erected this monument, Ao. Dni. MDCXVII. N. Who fayth, love, mercy, noble constancie To God, to virtue, to distress, to right, Observ'd, exprest, shew'd, held religiously, Hath here this monument thou seest in sight, The cover of her earthly part, but, passenger, Know heaven & fame contaynes the best of her. (On wood, between chancel and nave). The Right Honourable the Lady Ann Clifford, Countess Dowager of Dorset, Pembroke, and Montgomery, repaired this Church A.D. 1658. (Bp. Nic. Visit. 1703).

Dorset Brough

(In. below chancel steps). Here Iyes Mr. Gabriel Vincent, Steward to the R. H. Ann Clifford, Countess Dowager of Pembroke, Dorsett, and Montgomery, and chief director of all her buildings in the north, who dyed in the Roman Tower of Burgh Castle, like a good Chritian, the 12 of February 1665, looking for the second comeing of our saviour Jesus Christ."
